Meter Readers and Smart Meter Installation

Eventually, your electric bill will be generated from the information transmitted directly from your Smart Meter to Lakeland Electric. Currently we are still phasing in the billing portion of the process which means we are still sending meter readers out, even if the home has the new smart meter. We will start billing from some of the meters in October 2011. This is planned to be a slow and VERY careful process to ensure that no customers are affected by the process- the accuracy of your electric bill is of the upmost importance to us. After October, all new meter installations will still be read by a meter reader for at least the first 2 months after installation to ensure accurate electronic readings versus the manual readings. After that point, it will no longer be necessary for a meter technician to either drive by your home or enter your property to read your electric meter.

If you currently receive a call when Lakeland Electric will be reading your meter, that will continue as long as the meter reader is coming to your home. Once your meter is being read electronically for billing, you will no longer receive calls.
